Corn Fritters with Chilli Con Carne aka ‘Mariachi El Brunch’

(two deep fried corn fritters with con carne, cheese, two fried eggs, guacamole, sour cream)

Good simple flavours, portions could have been a bit more generous.

The Inglorious Bastard Sandwich

(pulled pork fritters, ‘slaw, house made BBQ sauce)

I wasn’t a fan of these fritters as the pork was somewhat dry and insipid. I also didn’t like the fact that you had to deconstruct this sandwich in order to eat it.

Overall:

I have never watched The Karate Kid and would not have made the connection between the name of this place and the film had it not been for the pictures of Mr Miyagi that were on our menus. Daniel Son is a bustling suburban cafe that offers a small menu and friendly service within a comfortable space. The dishes I sampled weren’t particularly amazing but perhaps some of their other menu items are.

Overall:

This unassuming bar is located in a small street right off Chapel St and offer a small and simple menu of American comfort foods. The staff were friendly however there was a considerable amount of wait time before our food arrived. Nevertheless I really liked the vibe of this place and would definitely come back for drinks and a snack or two.

Awesome courtyard out the back, friendly staff, unexceptional food. And why is this place called ‘the Chinese’?

Duck for cover – Italian-style pork sausage, burnt butter gnocchi, fried egg and swiss chard

Image

Stacks on – Grilled chorizo sausage, hash brown, guacamole, sour cream and roasted corn relish

Thoughts:

Duck for cover – don’t be fooled like I was, contains no duck. The gnocchi was soft, had good texture but was covered with large salt granules making them slightly crunchy which was a bit strange = Not bad

Stacks on – the chorizo sausage was overcooked and thus was dry, chewy and extremely salty. The hash brown however was terrific! = Not bad

Overall:

A bright and friendly looking place (think lots of primary colours) that has good service and a small menu of quirky named dishes (eg. Leeky coq, Bck-bck-begerk). Just note that portions are on the small side and that the chai lattes here have no sweetness to them whatsoever.

Potato wedges with sweet chilli, sour cream, harissa mayo

Image

Sweet potato, zucchini and herb cakes with harissa yoghurt

Image

Turkish pizza with spiced chicken, bacon, guacamole, spring onion and sour cream

Thoughts:

Wedges – AMAZING! Crunchy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, well seasoned (I suspect with lots of msg as I was super thirsty afterwards). Also have to mention that the harissa mayo that came with it is very tasty = Excellent

Sweet potato, zucchini and herb cakes – average deep fried cakes that had its taste overpowered by the spicy harissa mayo = Not bad

Turkish pizza – good if you’re craving meat as they pack it on with this particular pizza = Not bad

Overall:

Go for the wedges! I have been here quite a few times and the wedges are always fantastic. I would also recommend the warm turkish bread with red capsicum dip. But apart from that, this is just another average restaurant.
