Shimbashi Soba & Sake Bar

DSC07435

Kamo Nan Soba

(noodles with sliced seasoned duck meat and mushrooms in a warm soup)

Aside from the tough chewy duck that was in the soup, everything was really good.

★★★★☆

DSC07423

Salmon Salad Soba

(chilled noodles with salmon sashimi and green salad topped with basil sauce)

A refreshing salad with nicely seared salmon.

★★★★☆

DSC07429

Agedashi Tofu

(deep fried tofu in a soy based broth)

★★★☆☆

DSC07418

Complimentary potato salad

★★★☆☆

Overall:

Look no further for fresh authentic soba noodles! Using Tasmanian buckwheat, an in-house Japanese stone mill produces buckwheat flour daily which is then used to make their hand-kneaded noodles. Service was friendly however the arrival of our food was very staggered. Note that this place only accepts lunch reservations, so arrive early for dinner or expect a bit of a wait.

Roast Salmon and Quinoa Salad

(avocado, snow peas, rocket, saffron and elderflower vinaigrette)

★★☆☆☆

Overall:

A charming unpretentious cafe where the staff were lovely and provided great service. The menu was limited compared to many other cafes (which is perfectly fine), however the dishes we sampled were merely average which was a shame.

Le Miel Et La Lune

DSC04680

House made grilled cured salmon – served with yuzu cucumber, salad, red onion, strawberries, blueberries, poached egg and toasted mulitgrain bread

Apart from the overly sweet salad, I really enjoyed this dish. The salmon was well cooked and the egg perfectly poached.

★★★☆☆

DSC04689

Pork belly potato hash – potato hash, sliced pork belly, enoki, shimeji mushrooms, capsicum, poached egg, creamy sesame sauce

Drowning in creamy sauce, this ordinary dish was extremely heavy and difficult to finish.

★★☆☆☆

DSC04678

Lamb burger – tzatziki, beetroot relish and cheddar cheese served with chips

Average burger, bland chips.

★★☆☆☆

DSC04671

Iced Hummingbird chai latte

★★☆☆☆

Overall:

Korean fusion at a place with a French name. Although the service was good, the food was sadly nothing out of the ordinary.

★★☆☆☆

Lamb Backstrap and Chicken Tikka skewers

★★★★☆

Overall:

We decided to get the $35 banquet option which was satisfying and extremely filling! The smoky charcoal cooked skewers and the borani banjan were the highlights for me, although the borani banjan could have been less salt-heavy. Service was lovely (the owner of this place is super friendly and we felt very well looked after), and the decor was quite lavish (lots of hand crafted solid wood furniture and Afghan artwork). A good place to come to if you are after a big feed.

Hearty and satisfying.

★★★★☆

A substantial salad that could have been improved with a wider variety of textures.

Roasted Mushrooms

(mushrooms, kale, toasted hazelnuts, goats fetta, lemon, and a poached egg on grain toast)

Overall:

Solid dishes, down to earth staff, welcoming and cheery atmosphere. No wonder this little suburban cafe was packed when we went. Note that this place takes bookings.

Overall:

I got really excited as soon as I saw ‘Fried chickpeas’ on the menu as I’ve had them before at Cumulus Inc and found them to be totally amazing. Looking through the menu there were so many things that we wanted to try so we decided to go with the Chef’s Selection. Now this turned out to be the best decision ever as the food was sensational and there was just so much of it! The staff were helpful and professional, and the decor was rustic yet very sleek. If you like Cumulus Inc then you would no doubt like its smaller upstairs sibling. This is certainly a place I would happily return to.

B’Cos Brazil

Pao de Queijo – Brazilian cheese puffs

These were delicious and had such a unique texture: soft, airy, chewy and cheesy. These were so good in fact that I want to have a go at making them myself soon.

Coxinha – Brazilian chicken and cream cheese croquette

★★★☆☆

Picanha – BBQ’d Brazilian beef served with Brazilian rice, beans and salad

I liked being able to choose our salad (as you can see I wanted to try a few) as well as our rice (I chose brown over white). The beef was fairly standard and on the small side.

★★☆☆☆

Overall:

This was a great introduction to Brazilian cuisine for me. Service was outstanding (the staff were very welcoming and helpful) and the place itself was small and casual. Note that this place is closed during the weekend.

Very small serving, tasty combination of ingredients.

★★☆☆☆

Deliciously succulent lamb.

★★★☆☆

DSC03910

Crispy duck, green papaya, pineapple, mango, tomato, cucumber, cashews, coriander, bean shoots, nahm jim

This was more like a pineapple salad with a few other ingredients tossed in.

★★☆☆☆

DSC03913

Cold drunken chicken, tiger prawns, roasted chilli and sesame mayu, soba noodles, cucumber, kohlrabi, spring onion and ginger dressing

★★★☆☆

Overall:

Located in a converted tram pay station, this laid-back cafe has an interesting Asian influenced menu.
